Many people think of all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) more or less interchangeably. While they have one thing in common - getting the engine's power to all four wheels - they're also different in some key respects. What should you know about AWD if you're buying a new Acura vehicle? MotorWorld Acura takes a closer look.
Â
Â
The Difference between AWD and 4WD
Four-wheel drive uses a transfer case to get power to all four wheels. It's a heavy system, but it's also built for heavy applications, including heavy-duty towing, extreme off-roading, and surer footing on steep hills and grades.
Â
AWD uses a differential to distribute power. It's lighter, making it a good fit for SUVs and cars alike. It's also able to re-route power and torque on the fly so you get a more responsive and agile drive in practically any conditions. While it's not something you'd take to Moab or Red Rocks, it's certainly sufficient for light off-road duty.
Â
Acura AWD Systems
There are two distinct AWD systems available in Acura vehicles.
Â
All-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Control System
Available in the Acura RDX, this system is capable of part-time AWD use, working in FWD under normal use for better fuel efficiency. If wheel slip is detected, torque is transferred rearward to maximize stability. Engine output is also varied on wet or icy surfaces, up to a 50/50 torque split. This allows a combined EPA fuel economy rating that's only one mile per gallon shy of the FWD model.
Â
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®)
This is a true all-weather AWD system. While most of us think of wet or icy conditions when we're thinking of AWD, SH-AWD in the Acura TLX allocates torque even on dry surfaces based on G-force, yaw rate, and steering angle. Torque is sent forward when cruising to improve fuel efficiency, but during sudden acceleration, more power is sent rearward for better traction. The result is the kind of handling you buy a performance car for!
